Certified Phlebotomy Technician Program

 

 

The phlebotomist is a vital member of the clinical laboratory team, whose main function is to obtain patient's blood specimens by venipuncture and microcollection for testing purposes.  

 

Phlebotomists are employed throughout the healthcare system including hospitals, neighborhood health centers, medical group practices, HMO's, public health facilities, veteran hospitals, insurance carriers, and in other healthcare settings.  The demand for phlebotomy technicians has increased substantially with the overall complexity of healthcare services and the risks of infectious disease.  Current healthcare industry experts predict a 15% increase in phlebotomy jobs by 2018.

This 8 Week Phlebotomy Technician Program offered in class and online prepares professionals to collect blood specimens from clients for the purpose of laboratory analysis.  Students will become familiar with all aspects related to blood collection and develop comprehensive skills to perform venipunctures completely and safely.  Classroom and lab work includes terminology, anatomy and physiology; blood collection procedures; specimen hands-on practice; and training in skills and techniques to perform puncture methods.  

 

As a Phlebotomy Technician, you may perform some or all of the following tasks:

  • Draw blood from patients and blood donors

  • Evaluate patients’ ability to withstand procedure

  • Explain blood-drawing procedure to patients and answer questions

  • Perform basic point of care testing, such as blood glucose levels

  • Prepare blood, urine and other specimens for testing

  • Verify patient/donor identity

  • Maintain medical equipment such as needles, test tubes and blood vials

Students will participate in a clinical rotation at the start of the 5th week of the program. Practicum experience will be under the direct supervision of a Phlebotomist. Students enrolled in the Phlebotomy program will be scheduled and may be rotated at one or more clinical sites.The Clinical Coordinator/Program Director determines the clinical assignment based on the needs of the student.
